This is a Toby Jug I have had in my collection for some while now, but knew very little about.  

It is a very large jug, standing at almost 13" tall.  He sits on a very elaborate chair and has an unusual shaped base.  He has black flowing hair which is dressed in curled layers.  He is unusual as both hands are resting on his knees (toby jugs usually hold a drinking jug)   He has an interesting handle which starts as Acanthus leaves at the top and turns into a Swans neck and head at the base where it joins the chair.

Very many thanks to Oscar from Spain, who has provided me with the following information regarding this jug:

"I am sure that he is spanish & I think it was made between 1870 and 1875 because of the colors, although the colors might be closer to 1875 because in Spain they used to paint only a few colors prior to this date. The colours before 1870 might be cobalt blue, dark green, black, red, violet. Other different colors arrived after this date, so the variety used on this jug lead me to believe about 1870 to 1875.  After this date, many ceramic makers in Spain turned their production to other different itemss, or even closed, so it is unlikely to be any later.

The toby doesn´t hold a pint of beer because it wouldn´t be fashionable in Spain at the time. Nowadays beer is more common in Spain, but in the XIX century red wine was more important.  The figure itself represents a Lord person, may be a person with a title named by the king.  The origin of this toby jug was the drawings, models and ideas which were brought from Stafforshire, It might be a development from Mr Edwin Forester."
