The jugs pictured on this page are just a small selection of the ones I currently have for sale.

If you are looking for a particular jug, please email me, as I may be able to help.

Ordinary Toby Jug

Toby_JugThis is a good example of an early 19th Century Staffordshire Toby Jug.

He has an attractive fern leaf design painted on his handle, nice warty face & a good head of foam on his beer.

Would make a good start to any collection.

Has had some restoration.

The Squire

Delft_SquireThis is another Aristocrat of the Toby Jug family, being about 11" tall and having very distinctive features - he is much more slender than the traditional toby jug.

It has been said that this jug is modelled on Ralph Wood the elder, although as far as I'm aware, no evidence has been found to prove this.

This very attractive and impressive jug is a more unusual version in Tin Glazed enamels.

Ralph Wood Toby Jug

Ralph_Wood_Toby_JugThis is one of the most sought-after Toby Jugs and one that every collector strives for.

Potted by the famous Ralph Wood during the mid 1780's, the lovely transluscent pale glazes, crisp modelling and great attention to detail are everything that one would expect from a jug made by this renowned potter.   Jugs in this style, with the glass raised slightly towards Tobys mouth, are sometimes referred to as the 51, as they can occasionally be found with this number impressed to the underside of the base.

Very rare to find one in such perfect condition as this.

Davenport Drunken Sal

Drunken SalThis is a very impressive jug in every way. She measures just over a stately 11" tall, 8" wide and 6" broad, and is of a very portly female figure who looks as if she can hold her drink along with the best of them!

Made by Davenport around 1830, she wears the traditional clothes of the time, her voluminous dress flowing to the ground, and a shawl draped around her shoulders.  A gin glass is clutched firmly to her chest by her left hand and a smouldering clay pipe is in her right.

A very rare jug, only 7 having been recorded.

The Sinner

The_SinnerAt first glance this jug is very similar to The Drunken Parson. However, he has sharper features & is less well dressed, wearing a coloured coat & waistcoat & no cravat.  Rather than wearing a wig, his hair is long & lank & he has a rather drunken look upon his face.

This is a very rare jug dating from around 1800, he is about 8" tall, & to my knowledge has not been made in any other sizes.

Majollica Falstaff

Falstaff This is a very crisply modelled Majollica toby jug.

Believed to have been produced by Edward Steel of Hanley, Stoke on Trent. Made in the form of Falstaff the Shakespearian character, this is one of the only toby jugs you will find that has a beard!  This particular jug is not marked, but some do have a lozenge mark to the base for 1883.

Lovely condition.

Oldfield & Co Martha Gunn

This jug is  rarely found on the open market. I have only seen 2 of these in over 25 years of collecting.   She is made by Oldfield & Co, mid 1830's & is their version of Martha Gunn.

She is smaller than the standard sized Toby, at approximately 9" tall, & is made of stoneware, finished all over in a brown glaze (sometimes referred to as Treacle). She has the Oldfield & Co stamp faintly impressed into the back of her seat.

I just love her fierce stare - you wouldn't want to cross her!

Small Seated Yorkshire

Seated upon a raised blue & pink stippled base, this jug is more unusual being only 7.5" high. He is well detailed & his separately modelled & applied arms and legs signifying an early jug, dating from around 1800.

These jugs are often confused with their Portobello- made counterparts, which are not usually so well modelled, have a harsher colouring & hold a different shaped jug (often decorated with a floral motif) which were produced some time later.

Ralph Wood Bacchus Jug

BaccusThis is a nice example of a Ralph Wood Bacchus jug.  Decorated in lovely translucent running glazes and very well modelled, possibly by J Voyez, it dates from around 1770.

It depicts Bacchus the god of wine with a figure of Pan to the reverse.  A monkey forms the handle & a dolphin forms the spout.

Early Pratt Type

Orange_PrattwareDating from around 1780/90's, this Toby Jug is painted in traditional prattware colours and measures 9.75" tall.

He wears the more rare orange colour coat and stands on an unusually tall base with lovely all over spongeware decoration, which is replicated on his handle.

Some slight restoration.
